01-2 synopsis
Kurt Schneider is a superficial and fun-loving character. Instigated by his mother he swindles his way into the legacy of a house and some money. (Here

(Translated EN) Dominant Sybille Schneider and her son Kurti, type macho mother's son, think they have a brilliant idea. Your landlady Erna Hintermayer has just passed away and has obviously left no heir. In order to make nails with her heads and snatch the apartment house under her fingernail, Mother Schneider gives the moribund landlady and dictates a "will" on her deathbed, which she and Kurti use as a universal inheritance. Suddenly, however, a young woman appears in the tranquil Salzburg who makes claims: her name is Ilona, is a Muslim, wears a headscarf all the time and comes from the deepest south-east of Europe.
Suddenly, bailiff Wondracek appears, who also suspects that not everything is right here, and demands participation in the inheritance, otherwise he will go public. Then Mom and Kurti Schneider start bribing the rightful heir in a very crude way. In this mixture of falsehood, lies, deceit and greed, Mama's darling Kurti and Ilona, this Mohammedan "intruder" into the supposed well-behaved Austrian bourgeois, come closer humanly. Ilona slowly learns the German language, and Kurti gradually separates himself from his prejudices and then from Mom's harassment and whisperings until finally, to the annoyance of the maternal heiress, the happy end between Ilona and Kurti approaches.

Kuti Schneider, a man of shallow knowledge and a cheerful personality, at the instigation of his mother Schnaderma, secretly inherited the estate of his recently deceased landlord: a house and money. But neither party can determine who the rightful heir is. They were all horrified one day when the legitimate heiress Ilona appeared before them from a remote part of Yugoslavia, because Ilona was the beneficiary of the high life insurance premium. In order not to lose her inheritance, Shnadmar tried her best to deceive Ilona, but all failed. In a series of contacts, Kuti really fell in love with Ilona. Ilona not only upends Kuti's succession plan, but also his emotional world.。(See P 152 of 《Ennio Morricone Fans Handbook》Volume 2

lona und Kurti explores themes of deception, cultural misunderstanding, and personal growth, set against the backdrop of a comedic drama. The story revolves around Kurt Schneider, a superficial and fun-loving character, and his mother, Sybille Schneider. They concoct a scheme to inherit a house and money by forging a will after the death of their landlady, Erna Hintermayer. However, their plans are disrupted by the arrival of Ilona, a Muslim woman from Southeastern Europe who claims to be the illegitimate daughter of the deceased and thus the rightful heir. As Kurti and Ilona interact, Kurti begins to shed his prejudices and eventually falls in love with Ilona. Meanwhile, a bailiff named Wondracek threatens to expose their fraud unless he is included in the inheritance. The film was produced in collaboration with television and premiered on April 18, 1991. It received mixed reviews, with some critics praising its satirical take on racism and xenophobia but criticizing its uneven tone and resolution1. The film was also released in Germany under the title Deutsches Mann geil!, which Schwabenitzky criticized for its misleading simplicity (AI here)

Ilona und Kurti is a 1991 Austrian film directed by Reinhard Schwabenitzky, and it features a soundtrack composed by the renowned Italian composer Ennio Morricone. Morricone is celebrated for his diverse and influential film scores, including works for Sergio Leone, Brian De Palma, and Giuseppe Tornatore.

The soundtrack for Ilona und Kurti, also known as Deutsches Mann Geil! Die Geschichte von Ilona und Kurti in Germany, includes tracks such as "Ilona's Love" and "Variationen zu 'Ilona's Love'". Morricone not only composed but also arranged and conducted the music for this film.

While Morricone's contribution to Ilona und Kurti is notable, the film itself explores themes of deception, cultural misunderstanding, and personal growth, set against a comedic backdrop. Despite its mixed reception, the film remains an interesting example of Morricone's work outside his more famous collaborations. (AI here)

02-Why is this movie being released now
According to the 4th edition of our website's chronology, there are a total of 448 films with original soundtrack by Morricone. However, in the past 22 years, only 195 films have been edited and released with Chinese and English subtitles, and more than half of the films are still waiting to be edited and released. Why release such a lesser known German dubbed film produced in Austria now?
Firstly, I would like to thank my friend Wang Hongmei for providing this movie DVD. For a long time, I have been unable to find the complete download resources for this movie. Although there are many online, they are all fragments. When editing Volume 2 of the "Ennio Morricone Fans Handbook" in 2022, I had to use these fragments and provide them to readers (see here). Later, Wang Hongmei, a friend working in Germany, learned about this situation. In June 2023, she voluntarily bought the DVD of this movie in Germany and mailed it to me. (See screenshot of email below, sorry only Chinese)
Ms. Wang is very young, and I first met her around the time of Morricone's concert at the 2009 Shanghai World Expo. She is a die hard fan of Morricone and used to be a volunteer translator for our website. In the past, when there was a complete need for human translation, she translated many movie subtitles for everyone. She used to work in Shanghai, but later went to Germany for further studies. After graduation, she stayed in the German financial industry and worked very enthusiastically. The use of foreign conditions has provided us with a lot of information and materials (see here), and this movie is one of them. 16 years have passed in a flash, and she is approaching her forties. We wish her success in her career and a happy life
Unfortunately, this DVD does not have subtitles and is in German. I have searched online multiple times, but have not been able to do so. Additionally, I have a lot of affairs at hand. i can only temporarily put it on hold. In a blink of an eye, over a year has passed. Recently, due to several reasons, firstly, I have researched current artificial intelligence subtitles, especially German dubbing to subtitles. I have experimented with 5 websites (all of which require payment), including China's 01,0203, websites all charge over 100 yuan for registering as members, but the results are very poor with an accuracy of only about 30%. Then I went to the overseas SONIX website that I have used before, claiming to be the best dubbing and subtitling website in the world. A one-and-a-half-hour movie costs $15, and the accuracy is only about 50% (It has more good results for English) . After watching it, it still makes me dizzy. Just as I was planning to stop here and try this AI recording website again in China for the last time, although the membership price was not low (180 yuan), a "miracle" still occurred. The result of subtitle preview shows that all key scenes can be understood with an accuracy of over 80%. It has two characteristics: first, the language of the original dubbing can be automatically recognized, so you don't have to fill in blindly; Secondly, one can freely choose to directly translate the original dubbing into Chinese subtitles, eliminating the hassle and errors of translating from German characters to Chinese characters. Of course, there are still many flaws in it, and I spent another two days making necessary corrections to its subtitles. The accuracy is at least 90%, which just is the embedded subtitles we are currently providing to everyone. I believe this subtitle can at least help you understand this movie with significant fluctuations in content.
2. Another important reason is that it has only been recognized by major websites in recent years as a film with original soundtrack by Morricone. My impression is that about five or six years ago, it had already been included in the Morricone chronology (see IMDB, CHIMAIDISCOGS), and the 10 pieces of music composed by Morricone were also confirmed. Therefore, when we compiled the fourth edition chronology, it was also designated as FA9108. This is an Austrian film that appeared when Morricone was 53 years old. Although we are not yet familiar with the connection between them, when we carefully listen to the theme song played by Hammond organ and flute, as well as other music played with different compositions and abrupt melodies, we can feel the maturity, stability, and unique craftsmanship displayed by this master during the peak of his career. It is an important work for studying the different characteristics exhibited by Morricone in different eras

3. The last reason is that this German language movie reminds me of my old German friend Chilian Rainer. We met in 1998 at the Gulou Post Office in Nanjing due to our love for stamp collecting, and our friendly relationship has been maintained for 26 years. Before his retirement, he was the Asian sales manager of ARRI company in Munich (specializing in photography equipment), so he has many friends in many countries in Asia. Throughout our 26 year relationship, we have maintained contact through various means such as family visits, emails, letters, packages, and more. From stamp collecting to music, from individuals to families, from food to tourism,,,,, he made me know more about Germany and its people. He was enthusiastic, cheerful, conscientious and persistent, which impressed me deeply. He is three years younger than me, unfortunately he passed away due to illness in 2023. I have always hoped to write a memorial article specifically for our friendship, but unfortunately, with so many affairs, I have been unable to fulfill my wish. When editing this German language movie, I naturally thought of him. To my surprise, I saw the name ARRI company prominently in the credits for the cast and crew at the end of this movie
The following picture shows Chilian Rainer's special visit to Nanjing in 1999

Life is like a passerby, and the passing is like this. Whether it's from my 26 years of friendly interaction with German friend Chilian Rainer or from the comedy movie I'm presenting to everyone, I have come to realize that regardless of the era, society, or ethnicity, the universal truth and basic principles of being a person and doing things are the same in both China and foreign countries. There is an old saying in China: "A gentleman loves wealth and takes it in a proper way." This vividly expresses the universal law that is universally applicable and has lasted for thousands of years. Optimizing one's living environment and striving for one's legitimate interests are inherent in human nature, including all living beings. It is understandable, but it is necessary to speak of morality, abide by rules, and obey the law. Although this "way" has various interpretations in different countries and societies, and its "quantity" varies greatly (such as the distribution of surplus value, proportion, etc.), its "quality" will always be the same, which is to speak of justice and morality. Everything must be compliant and legal, and cannot be done arbitrarily. Unless it is a revolutionary rebellion, and it needs to stablish new regulations. A person is like this, a family, a country is like this. Violating this rule, whether it's fraud or chaos, may lead to temporary success, but ultimately it will be punished and even abandoned by history!
This may be an important reason why this movie was able to win the Ernst Lubich Award!
