Summary
|
The
Old Testament story of Abraham and the trials he endures.
Commanded by God to lead his family to the promised land
of Canaan with the promise that if he does so, his descendants
will become a great and numerous tribe. His obedience, as
well as that of his children and grandchildren, is severely
tested as they prove their faith to God. Written by Jean-Marc
Rocher {rocher@fiberbit.net}
The
first chapter in the story of Salvation. Rather than choosing
a great leader or king, God chooses Abraham, an elderly
shepherd from Mesopotamia, as the way to establish his Covenant
with mankind ... Abraham is a man of great faith. After
his calling he continues to believe in God even when He
seems to have abandoned him. For Abraham, God's greatest
promise is that his family will continue through the line
of Isaac, Abraham's favourite son. However God presents
him with a tremendous test by asking him to sacrifice of
Isaac. Is Abraham willing to put God first? Even before
the life of his son? Written by Lux Vide (here)

About
Abraham and Abrahamic religions
|
|
|
Abraham
(Hebrew: Standard Avraham Tiberian ?A?rāhām Ashkenazi Avrohom
or Avruhom ; Arabic: , Ibrāhīm ; Ge'ez:, Abraham) is a man
featured in the Book of Genesis and an important figure in
several monotheistic religions. Jewish, Christian and Muslim
traditions regard him as the founding patriarch of the Israelites,
Ishmaelites and Edomite peoples. He is widely regarded as
the patriarch of Judaism and Islam and monotheism. Abraham
means "Father of Nations"[citation needed] - "Av"
is Hebrew for "Father", and "Raham" is
the Arabic for "Nations or Multitude". Also considered
to mean "High Father", coming from the Aramaic words
"Aba Rama"[citation needed]
Abraham's
father was Terah, the grandfather was Nahor. Abraham's brothers
were named Nahor and Haran.[2] According to Genesis, Abraham
was brought by God from Mesopotamia to the land of Canaan.
There Abraham entered into a covenant: in exchange for sole
recognition of YHWH as supreme universal deity and authority,
Abraham will be blessed with innumerable progeny. According
to Jewish tradition (based on the Anno Mundi era), Abraham
lived AM 1948–2123 (1812 BCE to 1637 BCE). Christian traditional
dates are about 2000 BCE to 1825 BCE.[3]

Judaism,
Christianity and Islam are sometimes referred to as the "Abrahamic
religions" because of the progenitor role Abraham plays
in their holy books. In the Jewish tradition, he is called
Avraham Avinu or "Abraham, our Father". God promised
Abraham that through his offspring, all the nations of the
world will come to be blessed (Genesis 12:3), interpreted
in Christian tradition as a reference particularly to Christ.
Jews, Christians, and Muslims consider him father of the people
of Israel through his son Isaac (cf. Exodus 6:3, Exodus 32:13)
by his wife Sarah. For Muslims, he is a prophet of Islam and
the ancestor of Muhammad through his other son Ishmael - born
to him by his second wife, Hagar. (Jews and Christians refer
to Hagar as Sarah's servant). Abraham is also a progenitor
of the Semitic tribes of the Negev who trace their descent
from their common ancestor Sheba (More) |

Abrahamic
religions
From Wikipedia
Symbols of the three main Abrahamic religions: Judaism (top),
Christianity (left) and Islam (right).
Map showing the prevalence of Abrahamic (pink) and Dharmic
(yellow) religions in each country.Abrahamic religions are
monotheistic faiths which recognize a spiritual tradition
identified with Abraham.[1][2][3] The term is mostly used
to refer collectively to Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
There are other religions included in the term, such as the
Samaritans, the Druze, the Mandaeans, the Rastafarians and
the Bahá'í.[4] Abrahamic religions account for more than half
of the world's total population. Today, there are around 3.8
billion followers of various Abrahamic religions.[5]
The
major non-Abrahamic world religions are grouped as "Eastern
religions", encompassing the "Dharmic" religions
of India and the "Taoic" East Asian religions.
Use of the term "Abrahamic" is far from universal
and has been found to be problematic for many reasons.
|
Origin
of the expression
The term "Abrahamic religion" is derived from a
term of Islamic origin, Millat Ibrahim, [2][3] although in
Muslim use only Islam is seen as truly reflecting the "Faith
of Abraham". It thus refers to the traditional claim
of relationship by the Arab Muslims to Abraham through his
son Ishmael, which is extended to include Muhammad, thus making
Abraham a common ancestor to all later prophets, since all
(except Muhammad) were descended from Israelites. Christians
refer to Abraham as a "father in faith" (see Romans
4); the phrase may also be meant to suggest that all three
religions come from one spiritual source.[7]
Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam (as well as the Baha'i Faith) comprise
a family of religions. A number of terms recognize their
historico-theological links: the popular label "Peoples
of the Book" underlines the central role scripture
plays among their adherents, while scholars of religion
sometimes categorize them as the "three major monotheistic
faiths." The term "Abrahamic" has advantages
over both usages; it focuses on a more specific affinity
than does the first and avoids the categorical and interpretive
controversies that may arise over the second while emphasizing
the paramount place that Abraham holds in all three traditions.[8]
Abraham
is recorded in the Torah as the ancestor of the Israelites
through his son Isaac, born to Sarah through a promise made
in Genesis..... (More)

Our friend,
Rodison C. Leonardo, was born in
the Philippines, a native Filipino. You can also call him by his
nickname Jing. He's 34 years old, a Roman Catholic. He holds a
degree of Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communication
Engineering. There was once an occurrence in his life he wanted
to enter Priesthood after his graduation in college. For some
personal reasons, he didn't continue to pursue it. So now he's
been working at Holcim Cement Plant for eight years. Holcim is
one of the biggest cement plants in the Philippines, and he holds
the position there as Maintenance Planner. Until now it's very
hard to admit that he's still a bachelor at his mature age. He
only diverts his time to watch film or hear music after his work.
He loves film and music. His real hobbies are to collect music
in LPs and CDs, and also to collect films in VHS, VCD and DVD
as well. He started to like Sir Ennio Morricone's music when he
saw the film "The Mission" in 1995. He considered The
Mission music 'very influential' to him. Seeking more of Sir Ennio's
works, he joined in one of Morricone's prestige forums. There
he met many friends in different nations who really loved to help
those who were beginners of knowing Sir Ennio and his magnificent
scores. He still makes contact to some of them through e-mail.
Knowing friends who have one common goal, "to spread the
music of Sir Ennio Morricone", is a very remarkable and tremendous
experience for him. It's so great to know there's someone in the
Philippines who really appreciate Maestro Ennio Morricone, truly
the legend of film music.
