About the director (Giuliano Montaldo)
|
|
|
|
|
Giuliano
Montaldo
(born February 22, 1930 in Genoa) is an Italian film director.
While he was
still a young student, Montaldo was recruited by the director
Carlo Lizzani for the role of leading actor in the film Achtung!
Banditi! (1951). Following this experience he began an apprenticeship
as an assistant director of Lizzani and Gillo Pontecorvo.
In 1960 he
made his debut as a director with Tiro al piccione, a film about
the partisan resistance, which entered for a competition in Venice
Film Festival in 1961. In 1965 he wrote and directed Una bella
grinta, a cynical representation of the economic boom of Italy,
winning the Special Prize of the Jury at Berlin Film Festival.
He then directed the production Grand Slam (1967) which starred
an international cast including Edward G. Robinson, Klaus Kinski,
and Janet Leigh. His cinema career continued with Gott mit uns
(1969), and Sacco and Vanzetti (1971), a film about the abuses
of the military, judicial and religious power.
In 1982 he
directed the colossal television miniseries Marco Polo, which
won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries.(See

John Cassavetes,Peter Falk, and Britt Ekland star in this

Hank
McCain (John Cassavetes) is the imprisoned gangster who gets
out of jail with the help of the mob. The syndicate wants
him to take part in a heist of a Las Vegas casino. The plan
is discussed and soon abandoned by the mob, but Hank decides
to go ahead with the robbery. Disguised as a fireman, he pulls
off the daring crime with the help of his current flame Irene
(Britt Ekland). The angry mobsters want him dead and they
soon close in on his old girlfriend Rosemary (Gena Rowlands)
for information that could lead to Hank. She would rather
commit suicide than give them information about her ex-boyfriend
as she obviously still carries a torch for her old flame.
Even without her help, the dragnet closes in on Hank as the
mobsters systematically figure out his whereabouts. This feature
was the Italian entry at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival, a
choice that caused controversy and questions. ~ Dan Pavlides,

|
Cassavetes
is pitch-perfect as McCain, a lone wolf ex-con who helps his
son rip off former mob comrades Peter Falk and Gabriele Ferzetti.
Things go wrong, and the gangsters hunt him down. On the run,
McCain brings along his girl (Britt Ekland) and enlists the
help of his devoted ex-wife (Gena Rowlands), two choices that
contribute to his downfall in this violently riveting Italian/American
co-production. Ennio Morricone did the simple but very memorable
score. With a supporting cast of familiar Italian greats,
including Luigi Pistilli, Florinda Bolkan and Tony Kendall.
