意大利两位电影导演。同胞兄弟。兄名维托里奥，弟名帕奥罗。出生于圣米尼亚托。父亲是一位律师，因反法西斯而被当局杀害。塔维亚尼兄弟曾就读于比萨大学，维托里奥学法律、帕奥罗学艺术。他们在校时期对电影发生了兴趣，常以电影俱乐部组织者和电影评论员身份参与电影工作。1954～1959年，他们拍过几部有关意大利抵抗运动的纪录片，并担任过荷兰纪录电影大师J.伊文思的助理导演。1962年，塔维亚尼兄弟与导演V.奥尔西尼合作拍摄了《一个将被烧死的人》一片（在威尼斯国际电影节上获奖），由于影片反映了迫切的社会政治问题，因而被认为是最早的具有政治电影萌芽因素的影片之一。由5个插曲组成、具有怪诞喜剧风格的《不法婚姻》(1963)一片反映了意大利的离婚问题。

早年在戏剧学校Centro Universiatio Teatrale上课时，与导演维斯康蒂相识，得以出演后者执导的话剧《欲望号街车》。同一时期他认识了意大利女演员安娜·玛尼亚尼和导演费德里柯·费里尼。
1948年与意大利演员卡拉佩拉结婚，这段婚姻维系到马斯楚安尼过世。但马斯楚安尼一生中有不少情人，最著名的是法国国宝级女演员凯瑟琳·德纳芙。二人在1971年至1975年间关系紧密，同时也搭档出演了几部电影。生有一女，基娅拉·马斯楚安尼。马斯楚安尼在母女二人的守护下过世。他的另一个著名情人是美国女演员费·唐纳薇。
马斯楚安尼因《意大利式离婚》、《特别的一天》(Una
giornata particolare, 1977)和《黑眼睛》(Oci
ciornie, 1987)获三次奥斯卡提名，是奥斯卡历史上凭借外语表演获得多次提名的纪录保持者。凭外语表演获两次提名的有索菲娅·罗兰、丽芙·乌尔曼以及伊莎贝尔·阿佳妮。
在一次访谈里说，费里尼找他出演《甜蜜的生活》是因为觉得他长了一副“极端平庸的面孔”。
1960年在《甜蜜的生活》中合作时，费里尼给马斯楚安尼起了"Snaporaz"的呢称。20年后费里尼执导《女人城》(La
Città Delle Donne, 1980)，马斯楚安尼出演的男主角名叫Snaporaz。
